**Kochi, India:** Edavela Babu, a prominent actor and former general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), has been arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with a rape case. The arrest follows a complaint filed by a woman actor who alleged that the incident occurred at Babu’s residence in Kaloor.
This arrest comes amidst a wider reckoning within the Malayalam film industry, which is grappling with a wave of sexual assault and harassment allegations against several high-profile figures. The Justice Hema Committee, formed by the state government in 2017, recently released its report detailing the systemic exploitation and harassment faced by women in the industry. The report, which was delayed due to legal challenges, revealed that the industry is largely controlled by a small group of powerful male producers, directors, and actors.
The allegations against Babu, along with those against actors Jayasurya, Siddique, Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, and director Ranjith, have sparked widespread outrage. Several actors, including Minu Muneer and Sonia Malhaar, have come forward with their own stories of abuse.
The public outcry has led to the dissolution of AMMA’s top panel, with president Mohanlal stating that they are taking “moral responsibility” for the allegations. The SIT is now investigating all the allegations against various individuals in the industry.
This ongoing crisis has brought the dark underbelly of the Malayalam film industry to light, with many calling for systemic reform to ensure the safety and well-being of women working in the sector.
