KLUANG – Former Umno secretary general Tan Sri Annuar Musa has urged Malay voters to support Perikatan Nasional in the upcoming Mahkota by-election, arguing that Umno needs “medical treatment” to recover from its current political direction.
Annuar, now the PAS deputy election chief, criticized Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for collaborating with DAP after the last general election, a move he believes contradicts the party’s core principles. He asserted that Umno’s condition has worsened under Zahid’s leadership compared to the era of Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“Umno needs to wake up, they are going in the wrong direction,” Annuar stated at a Perikatan ceramah in Kampung Tengah on Tuesday. He promised that Perikatan would welcome Umno back once it has “recovered.”
The Mahkota by-election is a direct contest between Barisan Nasional’s candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan’s candidate Mohamad Haizan Jaafar. The seat became vacant following the passing of its incumbent, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, in August.
With a total of 66,318 voters and 20 polling centres, the Mahkota state constituency, located within the Kluang parliamentary constituency, will see voters head to the polls this Saturday, September 28th.
