JOHOR BARU – Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has assured that measures are in place to facilitate a smooth journey for Mahkota voters residing and working in Singapore to return home for the by-election this Saturday, September 28th.
Speaking at the Causeway in Johor Baru, Onn Hafiz confirmed that the Immigration and Customs Departments are prepared to manage potential traffic congestion on Friday and Saturday. This comes as an estimated 300,000 Malaysians commute daily between Johor and Singapore for work.
“A lot has been done by the state and federal governments to tackle the traffic congestion at the border crossings,” he said, highlighting the addition of buses, more immigration officers at counters, and upgrades to infrastructure and border clearance systems.
He stressed that he was not at the Causeway for a spot-check but to personally appeal to voters in Singapore to return for the election. He urged voters to participate in the Mahkota by-election, emphasizing its importance for the constituency and Kluang.
The Mahkota state seat will see a tight race between Barisan Nasional’s Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan Nasional’s Mohamad Haizan Jaafar. The by-election was triggered by the passing of the incumbent, Datuk Sharifah Syed Zain, in August.
Onn Hafiz has been vocal about the need to improve the traffic situation at the Causeway and Second Link, actively conducting spot-checks at both border checkpoints. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to enhance the comfort of travelers.
