Wed Sep 25 01:19:58 UTC 2024: ## Macron Urges Iran’s New President to De-escalate Tensions in Lebanon

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Iran’s newly elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian, to use his influence to de-escalate tensions in Lebanon, where Israel is carrying out airstrikes against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group.

During a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Macron expressed concern over the rising casualties in Lebanon and emphasized Iran’s responsibility to promote de-escalation. He specifically urged Pezeshkian to influence destabilizing actors, referring to Hezbollah.

Macron’s call for de-escalation comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, sparked by the recent death of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in a suspected Israeli operation.

The French president also voiced concerns over Iran’s alleged supply of missiles to Russia, a move that has led to European sanctions. He warned Pezeshkian against Iran’s continued support for Russia’s war in Ukraine.

While Pezeshkian has presented himself as a moderate, the United States has expressed skepticism regarding his ability to influence Iran’s policies.

In addition to the Lebanese situation, Macron also raised the issue of three French nationals currently imprisoned in Iran, requesting their release.
