SOKOTO, NIGERIA – The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has expressed deep concern over the rising prevalence of drug abuse among soldiers deployed in various operational theaters. This alarming trend was highlighted during a one-day seminar on “Optimizing Warrior Ethos in the Nigerian Army: A Panacea for Operational Effectiveness,” organized by the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation.
The seminar, held in Sokoto, aimed to address issues including drug abuse and enhance operational effectiveness. Represented by Brig. Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, the COAS emphasized the need for a “battle-winning mentality” and highlighted the threat of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear terrorism.
Lagbaja acknowledged the gravity of drug abuse, stating that it “has become quite worrisome and necessitates troops’ awareness in a bid to enhance combat effectiveness.” He urged commanders to prioritize innovative ideas and approaches to improve troop management and readiness, aligning with his command philosophy for the Nigerian Army.
The seminar was hailed as a timely intervention to address critical issues affecting the Nigerian Army. The Department of Army Innovation and Transformation, responsible for organizing the event, pledged to continue its efforts to enhance leadership capabilities and combat drug abuse within the military.
The COAS reassured troops of Operation Hadarin Daji in Sokoto State of continued support in logistics and guidance, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring their success in operations.
