**Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir:** The second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections saw a strong voter turnout of 54% by 5 PM, according to the Election Commission of India. Over 2.5 million eligible voters across 26 constituencies in six districts are casting their ballots to decide the fate of 239 candidates.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate expressed confidence in the party’s ability to win the elections, citing the high voter turnout as a clear indication of public dissatisfaction with the BJP’s policies and a desire for change. She criticized the previous government’s mismanagement and highlighted the region’s struggle with unemployment in recent years.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, emphasizing the importance of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, reiterated his commitment to fighting for the people’s right. He stated that the INDIA bloc will employ all its strength in Parliament and outside to pressure the Centre into restoring statehood after the assembly elections.
Gandhi also highlighted the economic potential of the Sopore apple, a key horticulture product of the region, and pledged to promote it in international markets if the NC-Congress alliance comes to power. He lamented the neglect of this important local product while emphasizing the potential for growth in the agricultural sector.
