**Brussels, September 25, 2024** – Despite strict sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, luxury cars manufactured in Europe and the UK are finding their way into the country, highlighting potential loopholes in the sanctions regime.
Sky News footage revealed that vehicles made by prestigious brands like Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes, and Jaguar Land Rover are being shipped to neighboring countries and then driven across the border into Russia, evading customs data and sanctions. This trend has seen a surge in car sales to Russia’s neighbors since the invasion.
European Council President Charles Michel acknowledged the challenge of effectively sanctioning Russia, stating that the bloc is constantly adjusting and refining its sanctions policy to counter these attempts at circumvention. “We want to cut the financing of the Russian war machine,” said Michel. “This is not easy. This is complex.”
He highlighted that despite the loopholes, the sanctions are having a significant impact on the Russian economy. “We’re absolutely determined it has an impact. It has an effect for sure. There is no doubt there is an effect,” he declared.
However, the revelation that Russia’s oil and gas industry has seen record profits in recent months underscores the need for continued vigilance and adjustments to the sanctions regime.
This news comes as the conflict in Ukraine enters its third year, with the international community continuing to grapple with the ramifications of Russia’s actions and the complexities of effective sanctions enforcement.
