Wed Sep 25 07:54:32 UTC 2024: ## Israel-Hezbollah Conflict Escalates, Raising Fears of Wider Regional War

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated, with fears growing of the fighting spiraling into a broader regional war that could draw in Iran, Hezbollah’s key backer.

On Thursday morning, Hezbollah fired a ballistic missile at Tel Aviv, which was intercepted by Israeli defenses. This followed a wave of Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon this week, resulting in the deadliest single day of violence in decades, with over 550 people killed. Among the casualties were dozens of women and children, including four teachers and two UN refugee agency workers.

Western nations are actively working to prevent the conflict from escalating further and involving Iran. While Iran has provided Hezbollah with financial, strategic, and military support, including weapons and missiles, it has so far remained on the sidelines.

Analysts suggest that Iran is hesitant to engage in a direct confrontation with Israel, fearing a potential response from the United States. They believe that Iran is more likely to continue supplying Hezbollah with weapons and possibly send additional militia forces from Syria or Iraq.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused Israel of attempting to provoke a regional war, claiming that Israel is trying to “trap” Iran into a broader conflict by attacking Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously labeled Iran an “existential threat” to Israel.

While experts believe Israel is calling Iran’s bluff, they acknowledge that the Israeli military has been successful in Gaza and Lebanon, despite concerns about potential violations of international law and civilian protection. Hezbollah, once seen as a formidable force, has been strategically outmaneuvered by Israel, which could explain the Iranian president’s softer tone at the UN and renewed offer to engage in nuclear talks.
