**NEW YORK** – President Joe Biden used his final address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday to call for peace in Lebanon and an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While acknowledging the challenges, Biden stressed the need for diplomacy in both situations.
“A full-scale war is not in anyone’s interest,” Biden stated, referring to the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. He emphasized the possibility of a diplomatic solution and urged both parties to finalize the terms of a cease-fire and hostage deal endorsed by the UN Security Council.
Regarding the year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Biden similarly called for a resolution, reiterating the need for a cease-fire and a deal on hostages.
He also reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering support for Ukraine in its ongoing fight against Russia’s invasion, urging the international community to remain steadfast in their assistance. “We cannot grow weary. We cannot look away, and we will not let up on our support for Ukraine, not until Ukraine wins with a just and durable peace,” Biden declared.
Biden’s statement that he would not seek re-election was met with the most enthusiastic applause from the audience. “My fellow leaders, let us never forget: some things are more important than staying in power,” he remarked. “It’s your people.”
While the vast majority of attendees applauded Biden’s remarks, notable exceptions included the delegations from China and Russia, who remained silent throughout his speech.
