**Chester-le-Street, UK:** Harry Brook’s maiden one-day international century propelled England to a 46-run victory over Australia in the third ODI at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday, keeping their series hopes alive. The win brought the score to 2-1 in favor of Australia with two matches remaining.
England’s chase started shakily, losing openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett early to Mitchell Starc. However, Will Jacks and Brook formed a crucial 156-run partnership, laying the foundation for England’s victory. Brook finished unbeaten on 110, smashing 12 fours and two sixes, while Jacks scored 84.
Rain intervened, bringing a premature end to the match with England ahead under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method for weather-affected games. This victory ended Australia’s impressive run of 14 consecutive ODI wins.
Earlier, Australia set a target of 304-7, with Alex Carey scoring 77 not out and Steven Smith contributing 60. Jofra Archer took 2-67 for England.
“It’s nice to get the first one on the board and hopefully plenty more to come,” said Brook, visibly elated after his century. “We just have to keep doing what we said we are going to do and keep being positive, take the game to them (Australia).”
Australia’s captain, Mitchell Marsh, conceded the importance of partnerships in one-day cricket. “In one-day cricket with a big partnership you can set the game up for yourself, fair play to them (England),” he said.
The absence of leg-spinner Adam Zampa due to illness was also acknowledged by Marsh. “Whenever you’re missing someone like him it’s hard work. But we’ll hopefully welcome him back in a few days,” he added.
The fourth ODI takes place on Friday at Lord’s, where England will be looking to level the series.
