Wed Sep 25 18:55:36 UTC 2024: ## England Stun Australia in Thrilling ODI Win, Brook Stars with Maiden Century
**Chester-le-Street, England:** England captain Harry Brook’s maiden one-day international century propelled his side to a thrilling 46-run victory over world champions Australia at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday, keeping their series hopes alive.
The win, which came despite a rain-affected finish, reduced Australia’s lead to 2-1 in the five-match series. England faced a daunting chase of 305 runs after Australia set a formidable target. However, a shaky start saw England reduced to 11-2 with both openers, Phil Salt and Ben Duckett, dismissed by Mitchell Starc in quick succession.
But Brook and Will Jacks, who scored 84 runs himself, came to the rescue. The duo forged a crucial 156-run partnership for the third wicket, displaying both composure and aggressive shot-making.
Rain intervened with England on 254-4 after 37.4 overs, but the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method ensured they were 46 runs ahead of the required target. The downpour prevented any further play, ending Australia’s impressive streak of 14 consecutive ODI victories.
Brook, who was named Player of the Match, expressed his delight after reaching his first century in his 18th ODI. “It’s nice to get the first one on the board and hopefully plenty more to come,” he said. “We just have to keep doing what we said we are going to do (in Friday’s fourth ODI at Lord’s) and keep being positive, take the game to them (Australia).”
Earlier, Australia, after winning the toss, posted a total of 304-7, with Alex Carey remaining unbeaten on 77 and Steven Smith scoring 60. England’s Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-67.
Australia, missing key leg-spinner Adam Zampa due to illness, were disappointed with the result. “I thought we did extremely well to get the 300 with conditions early on, a lot of seam and it was hard work,” said Australia captain Mitchell Marsh. “In one-day cricket with a big partnership you can set the game up for yourself, fair play to them (England).”
The series continues at Lord’s on Friday, with both teams hoping for a more straightforward encounter.
