Wed Sep 25 02:21:00 UTC 2024: ## Japan’s Organ Transplant System Faces Crisis as 509 Patients Forced to Abandon Operations

**Tokyo, Japan:** A new survey by the Japanese Ministry of Health revealed a disturbing trend in the country’s organ transplant system: 509 patients were forced to abandon their transplant operations last year due to hospital limitations. This is the first time the government has conducted a comprehensive survey on this issue.

The survey, which analyzed data from 131 brain-dead individuals, found that a total of 3,706 individuals couldn’t receive transplants in 2023. Of these, 509 cases were directly attributed to hospital challenges, including staff shortages and insufficient intensive care unit space.

The most affected organs were lungs (364 patients), followed by hearts (53) and kidneys (55). These figures highlight a critical shortage in resources dedicated to organ transplantation in Japan.

Currently, patients can register at only one hospital for organ transplantation, creating a bottleneck and further exacerbating the issue. To address this, the Ministry of Health has proposed allowing patients to register at multiple hospitals, a significant change to the existing system.

The ministry is expected to finalize a plan soon, aiming to increase access to organ transplants and alleviate the pressure on the current system. This new initiative is a crucial step in tackling the challenges facing Japan’s organ transplant program and ensuring that patients in need have a greater chance of receiving life-saving treatments.
