Wed Sep 25 08:49:20 UTC 2024: ## Hurricane Helene Barreling Towards Florida, Prompts Evacuations and Emergency Declarations

**Miami, Florida -** Hurricane Helene, rapidly intensifying in the Caribbean Sea, is on a direct path towards the US, prompting evacuations, school closures, and emergency declarations in Florida and Georgia.

The storm, currently near Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is expected to strengthen further as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico. Heavy rainfall is forecast for the southeastern US, with a life-threatening storm surge predicted along Florida’s west coast.

The hurricane’s vast size extends the hurricane warning to areas as far north as Georgia, with potential rainfall impacting inland states like Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana. “You’re going to have a major hurricane plowing inland, and storms take a little time to decay once they’re inland,” warned Brian McNoldy, an environmental researcher at the University of Miami.

Helene is expected to become a Category 3 hurricane by Thursday, the day it is forecast to hit Florida’s Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center has issued hurricane warnings for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula and Florida’s northwestern coastline, where storm surges of up to 15 feet are anticipated.

As the storm approaches, residents along the potential path are taking precautions. Will Marx, a retiree in Crawfordville, Florida, has prepared his mobile home with extra water and is watching as others move boats and RVs out of harm’s way. “We will know tomorrow, I guess,” he said.

Governments are taking swift action. President Biden declared an emergency in Florida, deploying federal resources like generators, food, water, and search-and-rescue teams. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who issued an emergency declaration for most of the state’s counties, reported that 12 healthcare facilities have already evacuated. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also declared an emergency in his state, including the city of Valdosta.

The storm’s arrival comes just a year after Hurricane Idalia caused millions of dollars in damage. This year’s above-average hurricane season is attributed to record-warm ocean temperatures, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Helene is the eighth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, and its path toward Florida highlights the increasing threat of severe weather events in the region.
