**Aberdeen, Scotland** – The UK government has announced that Great British Energy, a new publicly owned clean energy company, will be headquartered in Aberdeen. This move aims to leverage the city’s established energy expertise and position it as a key hub for the UK’s clean energy transition.

The company’s mission is to drive the deployment of clean energy, creating jobs, boosting energy independence, and ensuring UK taxpayers, billpayers, and communities reap the benefits of homegrown energy. The government plans to invest £8.3 billion in the company over the next parliamentary term.

“This marks the next step to kickstart Great British Energy, as part of its mission to become a clean energy superpower,” said the government release. “An interim Chief Executive will soon be appointed to take the lead on launching the new company and building its Aberdeen base.”

Two additional sites will open in Edinburgh and Glasgow, further supporting the development of local skills and expertise.

The move has been welcomed by industry body Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), which believes Aberdeen’s energy heritage and skilled workforce make it a natural choice. However, OEUK also expressed concerns about the government’s recent tax changes, warning that they could negatively impact the sector’s future.

“Aberdeen is an energy powerhouse and home to brilliant British engineering – it must and should be part of the UK’s energy future,” said OEUK CEO David Whitehouse. “Where GB Energy is located is important but what really matters is what it does. Success will be built on partnerships with industry unlocking the private sector investment needed to achieve the homegrown energy transition and economic growth we all want.”

The announcement signifies the government’s commitment to a clean energy future, leveraging existing infrastructure and expertise in Aberdeen to drive innovation and secure the UK’s energy independence. While welcoming the move, industry stakeholders urge the government to ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector through a balanced approach that prioritizes partnerships and addresses concerns about the impact of recent tax changes.
