**Former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.**
Varane, who joined Italian club Como on a free transfer in July, suffered a knee injury on his debut last month. He has decided to hang up his boots after a decorated career, citing a desire to prioritize his health and personal well-being.
“I hold myself to the highest standard,” Varane wrote on Instagram. “I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct.”
Varane’s career began at French club Lens before he moved to Real Madrid in 2011. In Spain, he enjoyed immense success, winning 18 trophies, including three La Liga titles and four Champions League titles.
In 2021, he moved to Manchester United for a reported £34 million, making 95 appearances for the club. He won the Carabao Cup in 2022 and his final appearance came in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City at Wembley in May.
Varane also enjoyed a successful international career, earning 93 caps for France. He was part of the French team that won the World Cup in 2018 and the Nations League in 2021.
Tributes have poured in from fellow players and footballing figures. Fifa president Gianni Infantino described Varane as “a legend of the beautiful game” while former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo wrote on Instagram: “A great career and a football legend! Congratulations for everything brother, hope to see you soon.”
Despite retiring from playing, Varane will remain with Como in a non-playing role. He has spoken openly about the impact heading the ball has had on his health, calling for greater awareness and protection for players.
“A new life begins off the pitch,” Varane said. “I hope I have made you all proud.”
