**Richmond, VA** – A groundbreaking new farm, Plenty Richmond, has opened its doors, marking the world’s first large-scale vertical farm dedicated to growing strawberries. This innovative approach to agriculture, backed by an international team of scientists, promises a more sustainable, affordable, and environmentally friendly way to produce food.

Plenty Richmond utilizes 30-foot-tall towers to grow over four million pounds of Driscoll’s strawberries in a space smaller than a single acre. This vertical farming system offers significant advantages over traditional methods, including:

* **Reduced land use:** The farm uses 97% less land than conventional strawberry production.
* **Water conservation:** Water usage is reduced by up to 90%.
* **Pesticide elimination:** The controlled indoor environment eliminates the need for pesticides.
* **Year-round production:** Consistent yields are achieved regardless of the season.
* **Increased efficiency:** Controlled light, temperature, and humidity create optimal growing conditions.
* **Lower pathogenic risk:** A shorter supply chain and controlled environment minimize disease risks.

The project is the culmination of years of research by a global team of scientists, including those from The University of Queensland, Macquarie University, and Wageningen University. The research, published in the journal Frontiers in Science, focused on maximizing yields and efficiency within vertical farming systems.

“If we are to increase food production by as much as 70% by 2050, we need to look at things differently,” said Paul Gauthier, Professor of Protected Cropping at the University of Queensland. “That is what vertical farming allows us to do – we didn’t have this possibility before.”
