Thu Sep 26 05:18:59 UTC 2024: ## Manchester United Held to Draw in Europa League Opener

Manchester United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Dutch side FC Twente in their opening Europa League match at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Despite taking the lead through a stunning strike from Christian Eriksen in the 35th minute, a costly second-half mistake allowed Sam Lammers to equalize for Twente in the 67th minute.

United dominated the early stages of the match, with Eriksen’s goal capping off a period of sustained pressure. Joshua Zirkzee led the line effectively, while Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo caused havoc down the flanks.

However, the game turned on its head when Eriksen lost possession in his own half, allowing Lammers to drive into the box and level the score. Twente’s resilience and goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall’s impressive performance kept United at bay for the remainder of the match.

United pushed for a winner but were denied by a combination of Twente’s resolute defending and Unnerstall’s heroics. Substitute Kobbie Mainoo had a penalty appeal waved away late on, leaving Erik ten Hag’s side with just a point from their opening fixture.

“We are disappointed as a team,” said Eriksen after the match. “We wanted more but it was far from good enough in the end. They looked like they wanted it more than us and that cannot be right.”

This draw will serve as a wake-up call for United, who will need to improve their performance if they are to make a serious challenge for the Europa League title.
