**Colombo, Sri Lanka:** Newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a Marxist leader who unexpectedly won the recent presidential election, has pledged to remain neutral in the geopolitical rivalry between India and China, despite acknowledging the crucial role both nations play in his country’s economic recovery.
Dissanayake, who pulled over 42% of the vote, has declared his intention to steer clear of regional power struggles, emphasizing that while both India and China are “valued partners” and potential sources of financial aid, he seeks closer ties with the West, the Middle East, and Africa as well.
The President’s pronouncements follow speculation about his potential alignment with China, which has been increasing its influence in the region. Concerns were raised in Delhi about Beijing’s growing leverage over Sri Lanka, particularly its strategic location on key shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean.
Despite such concerns, Dissanayake has reassured both India and the United States, which are wary of China’s expanding influence, that Sri Lanka will not become a military base for any foreign power. He reiterated his commitment to maintaining national sovereignty.
The new President has publicly acknowledged India’s crucial role in Sri Lanka’s economic stability and regional security, and has vowed to work closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
However, Dissanayake has also expressed his intention to renegotiate the terms of the IMF’s $3 billion bailout package, which includes tax hikes and spending cuts that many in Colombo believe have exacerbated the cost-of-living crisis.
As Sri Lanka grapples with its ongoing financial crisis, President Dissanayake faces the challenge of navigating a complex geopolitical landscape while securing vital international support for his country’s economic recovery.
