Recent polls suggest that Donald Trump’s chances of winning the 2024 Presidential election against Vice President Kamala Harris have improved. While Harris remains the slight favorite, her lead has narrowed significantly.
According to the latest forecast model from 538, Harris now has a 55% chance of winning the Electoral College, compared to Trump’s 45%. This represents a shift from September 17th when Trump was given only a 39% chance of victory.
The improvement in Trump’s chances is attributed to recent polls showing a tighter race than previously predicted. A New York Times/Siena poll of key Sun Belt states revealed that Trump has gained Arizona, leading by 5 points. He also maintains leads in Georgia and North Carolina.
While Trump would need to win these states, as well as Nevada, to secure victory, Harris could still win by taking Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, collectively known as the “blue wall.” 538 currently forecasts Harris to be marginally ahead in these states.
However, a Quinnipiac University poll showed Trump with a 1-point lead over Harris in a full ballot, while a two-way race has the candidates tied at 48%. This marks a decline in enthusiasm among Harris supporters, with 70% now expressing strong support for her, down from 75% in August.
Despite these fluctuations, the race remains incredibly close. Experts believe the outcome could be closer than any election in nearly 150 years. The key factors influencing the race will be voter enthusiasm and the ability of each candidate to mobilize their base.
