Former President Donald Trump, speaking at a “Made in America” rally in Savannah, Georgia on Tuesday, appeared to call for an assault weapons ban. The ex-president, addressing a crowd of approximately 2500 people, spoke of the need for a “manufacturing renaissance” while simultaneously calling for a large-scale deportation operation.
Trump argued that safe streets are essential for economic growth, stating that “we can’t have factories being built where you have criminals walking down the street with the worst weapons that you’ve ever seen, with machine guns and everything else.” This statement comes in direct contrast to a recent ruling by a U.S. District Judge, appointed by Trump himself, which declared the federal ban on machine guns unconstitutional.
Gun violence prevention activist Shannon Watts highlighted the irony of Trump’s remarks, noting that his own party has pushed legislation allowing such weapons on the streets.
The former president’s speech emphasized familiar themes of economic promises and attacks on immigrants, a strategy he employed throughout his 2016 presidential campaign. However, the apparent call for an assault weapons ban, a position often associated with Democrats, is a departure from his previous stance on gun control.
