Wed Sep 25 07:44:52 UTC 2024: ## DoD Invests $16.2 Million to Establish Domestic Tin Smelting and Refining Facility
**Coatesville, PA -** The Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded a $16.2 million grant to Nathan Trotter & Co., Inc. to build a domestic facility for tin smelting, refining, and recycling in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. This investment, made through the Defense Production Act Investment (DPAI) program, aims to address the United States’ reliance on foreign tin refiners and strengthen the national supply chain.
Tin is a critical material for numerous defense applications, including soldering in semiconductors and other electronic components used in military hardware and civilian infrastructure. The new facility will be designed to eventually meet a significant portion of the US’s annual tin requirement.
“This first Defense Production Act investment in the tin industrial base will directly counter our reliance on foreign tin refiners and reduce supply chain vulnerabilities,” said Dr. Laura Taylor-Kale, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy.
The facility will also enhance tin recycling efforts, ensuring that the metal remains within the US. This investment further aligns with the National Defense Industrial Strategy’s objective to promote domestic production of critical minerals.
“Establishing this comprehensive tin processing facility will help secure the continuous flow of primary tin materials from friendly sources, countering Chinese efforts to monopolize the global supply,” said Mr. Anthony Di Stasio, Director of the Manufacturing Capability Expansion and Investment Prioritization directorate.
This award marks the latest in a series of DPAI grants totaling $589 million since the beginning of fiscal year 2024. The DoD is committed to strengthening the nation’s industrial base and ensuring a secure and resilient supply chain for critical materials.
