**Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia** – Despite a decrease in the number of reported cases, commercial crimes in Malaysia have resulted in a significant surge in financial losses this year. According to Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, director of the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), over RM1.78 billion has been lost to commercial crimes between January 1st and September 22nd, a 24% increase compared to the same period last year.
While there were 21,441 cases reported this year, representing an 11% decrease from the 23,958 cases recorded in the same period last year, the losses have spiked significantly. Comm Ramli attributed the higher financial losses to the sophisticated nature of these crimes, making them more difficult to prevent.
Despite the challenges, the CCID has made progress in prosecuting offenders, with 48% of investigation papers resulting in successful prosecution this year, an increase from the 43% achieved in the previous year.
Comm Ramli urged all members of society to remain vigilant against commercial crimes and share crime prevention messages. He also stressed the police’s commitment to further bolster their efforts to curb and prevent these criminal activities.
