**LONDON, Sept. 25, 2024** – Clarivate Plc, a global leader in providing transformative intelligence, has announced the development of a comprehensive framework for evaluating the societal impact of research. This groundbreaking approach is outlined in a new report released by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)™ and will be integrated into the upcoming Web of Science Research Intelligence™ platform.
The report, titled “A responsible framework for evaluating the societal impact of research,” emphasizes the need for a robust evaluation system that goes beyond traditional academic metrics to encompass a broader range of data sources. This includes patents, clinical trials, policy documents, media publications, datasets, educational outputs, funding data, and more.
“As global R&D spending continues to rise, funders, governments, and institutions face increasing pressure to demonstrate the tangible benefits of their investments,” stated Emmanuel Thiveaud, Senior Vice President of Research and Analytics, Academia & Government at Clarivate. “This new framework provides the tools necessary to meet this demand, allowing users to focus on specific research areas relevant to their organizational goals.”
The framework addresses core challenges in evaluating societal impact by leveraging Clarivate’s extensive data resources, including external sources when required. This comprehensive approach ensures a nuanced and accurate assessment across various domains.
The framework consists of eight facets, each containing multiple metrics for detailed and customizable evaluation. The overall societal impact for each facet is presented in a Societal Impact Profile™ with supporting individual metrics available for transparent and granular analyses. This allows Web of Science Research Intelligence platform users to tailor the evaluation to their specific needs.
Dr. Dmytro Filchenko, Senior Director of Research & Analytics at the Institute for Scientific Information, highlighted the framework’s ability to leverage “enriched data that goes beyond scholarly output,” enabling a more comprehensive understanding of research impact.
The upcoming Web of Science Research Intelligence platform, powered by AI, will empower researchers to accelerate breakthroughs and research institutions to better measure and showcase the impact of their research.
This new framework is a significant step in addressing the growing demand for demonstrable evidence of research benefits across various sectors of society. By providing a responsible and robust approach to evaluation, Clarivate is empowering stakeholders to make informed decisions and maximize the positive impact of research investments.
