Wed Sep 25 04:44:58 UTC 2024: ## China Conducts Rare ICBM Test, Flexing Military Muscle Amid Tensions with US

**BEIJING** – China conducted a rare test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Wednesday, sending it into the Pacific Ocean, according to the country’s defense ministry. The test, described as a “routine arrangement in our annual training plan,” has been interpreted by experts as a demonstration of China’s growing nuclear capabilities and a flexing of its military might amidst rising tensions with the United States.

While China has historically conducted such tests within its own airspace, this launch is believed to be the first of its kind in decades. “This is extremely unusual… likely the first time in decades that we’ve seen a test like this,” said Ankit Panda, Stanton Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He believes the test signals China’s ongoing nuclear modernization and highlights new testing requirements.

The US and China have been engaged in talks regarding nuclear arms control, but those negotiations were suspended by Beijing in July in response to Washington’s arms sales to Taiwan. Despite the recent setback, both countries held “in-depth” military talks this month, hoping to prevent escalating tensions from leading to conflict.

China has been steadily increasing its nuclear arsenal in recent years, with the Pentagon estimating that Beijing will surpass 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030. This comes as China seeks to counter the growing US military presence in the region and assert its influence in the South China Sea and Taiwan.

While China maintains it will never be the first to use nuclear weapons in a conflict, its recent military modernization drive, including the upgrade of its nuclear arsenal, indicates a shift towards a more assertive stance. The test launch also comes amidst an ongoing anti-corruption campaign targeting the country’s Rocket Force, the branch responsible for China’s nuclear weapons.

This latest development further fuels concerns about the growing nuclear rivalry between the US and China, highlighting the need for continued dialogue and efforts to prevent a new arms race.
