**Beijing, China** – China has conducted a rare test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the Pacific Ocean, sparking international concerns about its expanding nuclear arsenal. The Chinese defence ministry confirmed the test, stating it was a “routine arrangement” within their annual training plan and not directed at any specific country. However, the launch, which took place on Wednesday morning, comes at a time of heightened tensions between China and the US, especially over Taiwan.
The ICBM, carrying a dummy warhead, was launched by the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force and “fell into expected sea areas,” according to the ministry. China reportedly informed “countries concerned” in advance, though the exact path and impact location of the missile remain unclear.
Analysts note that China typically tests its long-range missiles in isolated provinces like Inner Mongolia, making this open-sea launch unusual. The PLA Rocket Force, responsible for both conventional and nuclear missiles, is tasked with modernizing China’s nuclear forces in the face of US missile defenses and strengthened alliances.
Security experts believe the test is a display of China’s military strength and a message of its strategic deterrent capabilities. While recent corruption scandals within the Rocket Force raised concerns, the test demonstrates “business as usual” at the highest military level.
Some analysts argue that China’s nuclear build-up goes beyond the minimum needed for deterrence. The country has consistently adhered to a “no first use” policy, but it is rapidly developing a triad of nuclear weapons capable of launch from land, sea, and air, catching up with major nuclear powers.
The launch comes amid increased Chinese military activity around Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory. Taiwan’s defence ministry reported the detection of 23 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighters and drones, operating near the island. The ministry also noted “intensive” Chinese missile firing and drills.
The US, which has criticized China’s lack of transparency regarding its nuclear program, scrapped nuclear talks with Beijing in July over US arms sales to Taiwan. The Pentagon estimates that China currently possesses over 500 operational nuclear warheads, with an estimated 1,000 by 2030.
China’s ICBM test serves as a stark reminder of the evolving power dynamics in the region and the growing concern surrounding its expanding nuclear capabilities.
