**BEIJING:** China has sparked international concern after confirming the successful launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday. The launch, which involved a dummy warhead and was conducted as part of routine military training, reportedly fell within expected sea areas.

The Chinese defence ministry described the exercise as an “annual training plan” and emphasized that it was not directed at any specific country. However, the launch has raised anxieties among several nations, including Japan and New Zealand.

Japan, which was not informed about the launch in advance, expressed concern about China’s growing military capabilities. New Zealand, meanwhile, described the event as an “unwelcome and concerning development.”

While China has previously conducted ICBM tests within its borders, firing long-range missiles into the sea is a rare occurrence. This move, according to analysts, underscores China’s commitment to modernizing its nuclear forces, particularly in response to advancements in US missile defense systems and surveillance technology.

Analysts also suggest that the launch could be a demonstration of China’s military might, particularly in light of recent corruption scandals within the PLA Rocket Force. The test, they argue, serves to reinforce the country’s nuclear deterrent capabilities.

The launch comes amidst growing tensions in the region, with Taiwan reporting increased Chinese military activity near its airspace. Taiwan’s defence ministry detected 23 Chinese military aircraft, including fighter jets and drones, operating around the island in recent days.

While China insists its nuclear arsenal is for defensive purposes, the increasing pace of its nuclear buildup has raised eyebrows globally. The Pentagon estimates China currently has over 500 operational nuclear warheads, with that number projected to exceed 1,000 by 2030. The US, meanwhile, has 1,770 and Russia 1,710 operational warheads.

China’s recent actions, including the ICBM launch and increased military presence near Taiwan, will likely continue to fuel anxieties about its growing military power and its impact on regional stability.
