Wed Sep 25 04:51:44 UTC 2024: ## Cambodia’s Canal Project Raises Concerns About Mekong River’s Future

**PREK TAKEO, Cambodia** – Cambodia’s ambitious plan to construct a massive canal linking the Mekong River to a port on its coast is raising alarm among regional experts and environmental groups. The $1.7 billion Funan Techo canal, being built with Chinese assistance, is intended to boost Cambodia’s export capabilities and reduce its reliance on neighboring Vietnam. However, critics warn that the project could have devastating consequences for the Mekong River’s delicate ecosystem and the livelihoods of millions who depend on it.

The Mekong River, a vital source of water for millions in six countries, is home to the world’s largest inland fishery and sustains the fertile rice paddies of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. Experts worry that the canal’s high embankments will prevent vital silt-laden floodwaters from reaching the delta, exacerbating droughts and impacting Vietnam’s rice production, a key component of its economy.

“A drier Mekong Delta is a major concern for Vietnam’s agricultural sector,” said Nguyen Van Nhut, director of rice export company Hoang Minh Nhat. “This will be a major concern for the agriculture sector of the Mekong delta.”

The canal’s potential impact on the Mekong’s flow has drawn criticism from Vietnam, which has expressed concerns about the project’s environmental impact. However, Cambodia has maintained that the canal is a “tributary project” and will have no significant impact on the river’s flow.

Despite Cambodia’s assurances, experts like Brian Eyler from the Stimson Center argue that the canal’s connection to the Mekong’s mainstream will inevitably affect water flow. They also point out that Cambodia’s plans to utilize canal water for irrigation during dry months will require agreements with other Mekong countries.

The Mekong River Commission, an organization formed for cooperation on Mekong issues, has called for a comprehensive assessment of the canal’s transboundary impacts. The commission is providing technical support to promote transparency and cooperation among concerned countries.

The canal project is not without its supporters within Cambodia, who see it as a way to boost the country’s economy and national prestige. However, critics argue that the project is driven by nationalist rhetoric and could lead to further tensions with Vietnam.

The project’s potential environmental and socio-economic consequences raise serious concerns about the future of the Mekong River and the communities that rely on it. The Mekong River Commission and regional stakeholders will need to closely monitor the project’s implementation and address any potential negative impacts on the environment and livelihoods of those living in the Mekong basin.
