Wed Sep 25 07:48:11 UTC 2024: ## Burkina Faso Aims to Join BRICS, Seeking Economic Independence
**Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso:** Burkina Faso has expressed its intention to join the BRICS group of nations, citing a desire to counter the dominance of the US dollar and euro in international trade. The announcement came during a meeting between Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem de Tambela and Russian Ambassador to Ouagadougou Igor Martynov on Monday.
During the meeting, the prime minister discussed bilateral cooperation with Russia in various sectors, including nuclear energy, economics, and politics. He highlighted the strategic importance of joining BRICS to achieve a “fairer international trade” system.
The Burkinabe government has also announced that Moscow will host a bilateral economic forum from October 8-11, dedicated to promoting economic and trade relations between Burkina Faso and Russia. The forum has previously been held in various countries including Senegal, Benin, France, Canada, South Korea, and Austria.
BRICS, originally formed in 2009 as a platform for collaboration between Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has recently expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia, while not officially a member, has been actively participating in BRICS meetings.
Burkina Faso’s desire to join BRICS underscores a growing global trend of seeking alternative economic and political models to the traditional Western-dominated system. The country hopes to leverage its membership to enhance its economic independence and influence within the international arena.
