Wed Sep 25 06:57:25 UTC 2024: ## British Troops Deployed to Cyprus Amidst Escalating Conflict in Lebanon

**LONDON -** In a move to ensure the safety of its citizens, the British government has deployed 700 troops to Cyprus as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies. The decision comes as Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed deep concern over the escalating situation, warning that the region is teetering on the brink of a wider war.

“Events in the past hours and days have demonstrated how volatile this situation is,” stated Defence Secretary John Healey, urging British nationals in Lebanon to leave immediately. “Our government is ensuring all preparations are in place to support British nationals should the situation deteriorate.”

The deployment of troops to Cyprus bolsters the British presence in the region, where two Royal Navy ships, aircraft, and transport helicopters are already stationed.

The current conflict, which began with fierce fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah, has fueled fears that a year of unrest in the region could explode into a full-blown war. This comes amidst the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.

Prime Minister Starmer has called for de-escalation, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire. “All parties need to pull back from the brink,” he stated in an interview with LBC radio. He further announced his intention to engage with allies at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York, advocating for a ceasefire and a de-escalation of the situation.

The escalating conflict in Lebanon has resulted in devastating casualties, with Health Minister Firass Abiad reporting 569 deaths, including 50 children, and 1,835 injuries. Thousands of displaced individuals have sought refuge in schools and other buildings.

Israel has shifted its focus from Gaza to the northern frontier, where Hezbollah has been launching rocket attacks into Israel in support of Hamas.
