**SEATTLE, WA** – Boeing has increased its contract offer to striking factory workers, raising the proposed pay raise over four years to 30% and adding more bonus money. However, the union representing the 33,000 workers remains unconvinced, and it’s unclear if they will even hold a ratification vote on the new proposal.
The original offer, which was overwhelmingly rejected by union members, included a 25% pay raise over four years. The new “best and final” offer aims to address worker concerns about living costs in the Seattle area, where housing prices are particularly high.
Despite the increased offer, strikers remain skeptical. They argue the raise is still insufficient to combat the rising cost of living and criticize Boeing for bypassing the union in publicizing the offer.
“It’s not enough. My mortgage is $4,000. I went to Safeway yesterday to get breakfast, and it cost me $62,” said Daniel Dias, a test technician at Boeing.
Som Dom, an electrician with 17 years at Boeing, echoed the sentiment: “We just want a fair deal. We’re not greedy. You’ve got to make over $160,000 to buy a house here. The new hires make $25, $26 an hour. This (offer) isn’t going to be enough.”
The union has expressed its dissatisfaction with the offer and is considering whether to proceed with a ratification vote.
The strike, which has entered its 12th day, has halted production of Boeing’s 737, 767, and 777 planes, impacting both the company and the community. Boeing is facing financial challenges and needs to resume production to generate revenue.
The strike’s impact on Boeing’s production and the company’s ongoing safety issues have come under scrutiny. Federal regulators are limiting production of the 737 Max due to ongoing concerns about the aircraft’s safety following two fatal crashes.
Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun emphasized the company’s commitment to safety, acknowledging that the company has “certainly learned” from the 737 Max crashes.
As the strike continues, the pressure mounts on both sides to reach a resolution. The future of Boeing’s production and the livelihoods of its workers remain uncertain as negotiations continue.
