Wed Sep 25 09:28:42 UTC 2024: ## Government’s €1.4 Million Security Hut Sparks Outrage
The cost of a new security hut at Government Buildings has sparked outrage among TDs and Senators, with the Tánaiste, Micheál Martin, calling the €1.429 million price tag “ridiculous.”
The hut, described as “beautiful” with a “sweeping copper clad roof,” was revealed to have cost over seven times the €195,000 price tag of the recently controversial Leinster House bike shelter.
John Conlon, chairman of the Office of Public Works (OPW), defended the cost, citing “significant” hidden security and communication system costs. He stressed that the hut was a “completely different” project to the bike shelter, which has also been criticized for its high cost.
The OPW has also come under fire for failing to consult with the Oireachtas Commission regarding the bike shelter’s costs, despite initial proposals outlining a more “cost-effective” option.
The Commission, which oversees the Leinster House campus, has stated that they were not consulted on the bike shelter’s costs and that they were not made aware of the “excessive expenditure.”
In light of the controversy, the OPW has pledged to improve communication with the Oireachtas Commission regarding future projects, ensuring transparency around costs for all elective projects in Leinster House.
