Wed Sep 25 09:28:42 UTC 2024: ## €1.4 Million Security Hut Sparks Outrage at Leinster House
A “beautiful” security hut at Government Buildings, costing over €1.4 million, has sparked outrage among Irish lawmakers. The revelation, made during an Oireachtas committee meeting, drew criticism from Tánaiste Micheál Martin, who labelled the cost “ridiculous.”
The hut, which features a copper-clad roof, was constructed following an extensive security review, according to the Office of Public Works (OPW). However, the hefty price tag raised eyebrows, with Green Party TD Steven Matthews questioning if it was excessive.
OPW chairman John Conlon defended the cost, citing “hidden” work related to security and communications systems. He emphasized that the project included significant electrical, mechanical, and security infrastructure, as well as the cost of a temporary structure during construction. He also stressed that this was a separate project from the controversial €336,000 Leinster House bike shelter.
Meanwhile, documents released by the OPW suggest that a cost-effective option for a bike shelter, located elsewhere on the grounds, was rejected by the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission. The Commission favoured a more prominent location on the Merrion Square side of Leinster House, despite the OPW’s concerns about security and circulation.
The Oireachtas Commission has denied any involvement in approving the bike shelter’s cost, stating that it has no role in capital expenditure decisions. The Commission also refuted claims that it rejected a cost-effective alternative, emphasizing that the OPW is the landlord and they are the tenants.
This incident highlights the growing concern over spiralling costs in public projects, with the bike shelter and the security hut becoming the latest focal points of criticism. The OPW has committed to providing the committee with a detailed breakdown of the security hut’s costs, and has promised to ensure better communication with the Oireachtas Commission regarding future projects.
