**LONDON** – Private equity firm BC Partners is in advanced talks to acquire a minority stake in the EuroLeague basketball competition, according to the Financial Times. The deal, which could be finalized within a month, sees BC Partners outbidding rivals including General Atlantic and SURJ Sports Investment, a Saudi Arabian firm.
This investment comes amidst growing interest from private equity firms in sports organizations. The EuroLeague, with its prominent clubs like Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, is seeking to enhance its financial sustainability through new rules and partnerships.
This deal follows a trend of sports leagues seeking external investment to bolster their financial standing and expand their reach. In July, Reuters reported that EQT, BC Partners, and General Atlantic were all interested in investing in the EuroLeague.
The EuroLeague’s search for investment aligns with its recent initiatives to increase financial stability. The Assembly of Syndicated Shareholders of Euroleague Commercial Assets, comprising 13 clubs, convened in June to approve new rules aimed at strengthening the competition’s financial foundation.
