A North Carolina baker is defending himself after a customer accused him of ruining a six-year-old’s birthday with a “ugly” cake. Gregory Mason, owner of Treat Yo’ Self Bakery, took to TikTok to share his side of the story, which has since gone viral with over 25 million views.
The customer, the mother of the birthday girl, claimed the cake, decorated with a yellow star and colorful rosettes, didn’t resemble the inspiration picture she provided. She also criticized the cursive writing and the color of the icing, which Gregory explained was made with natural food coloring she had requested due to her daughter’s allergies.
The customer demanded the cake be remade and was particularly upset that the cake’s design didn’t feature a 3D unicorn horn. Gregory, who doesn’t use fondant, explained that he could only recreate a flat, piped unicorn.
The customer’s harsh words, which included accusations of incompetence, pushed Gregory to post the video and defend his work. “If you don’t like the cake, then let’s just have a polite conversation and figure out the miscommunication,” he said in the video.
The situation escalated when the customer called the bakery to demand a replacement cake and a full refund, essentially asking for the cake for free. Gregory, while disappointed, agreed to the refund, but without providing a replacement cake.
The story has divided online users with many supporting Gregory and criticizing the customer’s behavior. Others, however, believe that Gregory should have been more clear about the limitations of his design style before accepting the order.
Gregory, who is grateful for the public support, says he’s hopeful that the incident will encourage people to treat service workers with more respect. He added that he hasn’t heard from the customer since the incident and isn’t sure if he would welcome her back to his bakery.
