Wed Sep 25 07:17:10 UTC 2024: ## Loyalists Oppose Irish Language School in East Belfast, Sparking Outrage
The Loyalist Communities Council (LCC), which includes representatives from paramilitary groups, has sparked controversy after calling on Education Minister Paul Givan to halt plans for an Irish language school in east Belfast.
The LCC claims the proposed school, a temporary nursery and primary, has “no meaningful support” from the local community and that there was no consultation with residents. However, Belfast City Council approved the plans in June with a majority vote, receiving only two objections and nine letters of support.
Politicians from across the spectrum have condemned the LCC’s stance, calling it an attempt to stoke fear and perpetuate a “sick and twisted society.” They argue that the school offers a safe and inclusive environment for children from all backgrounds and that the LCC does not represent the majority view of the loyalist community.
The LCC, meanwhile, claims its focus is on addressing educational underachievement in loyalist areas and that the Irish language school is a distraction. They met with Minister Givan to discuss their concerns and their proposed solutions.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions around cultural identity and education in Northern Ireland, with the LCC’s opposition to the Irish language school seen by many as a further attempt to undermine shared space and promote division. The DUP, which includes the MP for East Belfast, has been contacted for comment on the matter.
