MANILA, Philippines – Journey drummer Deen Castronovo has come to the defense of Filipino vocalist Arnel Pineda, who faced harsh criticism for his alleged subpar performance at the Rock in Rio Festival in Brazil.
Castronovo, known for his fiery personality, took to Facebook to address the online trolls who had been attacking Pineda. He emphasized that Pineda consistently gives his all for Journey, night after night, and that vocal performance is subject to various factors beyond singer’s control, such as fatigue, weather, and illness.
“Arnel has RISEN to the challenge of Journey’s catalog, NIGHT after NIGHT, YEAR after tiring YEAR! He gives to YOU ALL and Journey, the best that he can give you,” Castronovo wrote. “The voice is a BIOLOGICAL INSTRUMENT, subject to weather, fatigue, virus, bacteria, jet lag etc. Sometimes it DOES NOT, CANNOT or WILL NOT cooperate when needed.”
Castronovo challenged the critics to step up and prove they could do better, reminding them that singers like Pineda are not afforded the luxury of a “perfect” performance every night. He concluded his post by emphasizing his loyalty to Pineda, stating, “BACK OFF TROLLS! You are MESSING with MY FAMILY NOW and I am A RABID PROTECTOR OF MY OWN!!!”
Pineda, who had initially offered to resign from Journey after the performance, expressed his deep regret and devastation over the event. He acknowledged his vocal difficulties and lamented the negativity overshadowing his years of dedication to the band.
Castronovo’s impassioned defense has drawn support from fans who appreciate Pineda’s contribution to Journey’s legacy. The situation highlights the pressure and scrutiny faced by musicians, particularly vocalists, whose performances can be subject to public scrutiny and criticism.
