Wed Sep 25 08:14:43 UTC 2024: ## Thailand Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage, Becoming Third Country in Asia to Do So

**Bangkok, Thailand** – A historic moment for LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand occurred this week as the country officially legalized same-sex marriage. The landmark bill, endorsed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Tuesday, will allow LGBTQ+ couples to register their unions starting in January. Thailand joins Taiwan and Nepal as the only other Asian countries to recognize same-sex marriage.

This momentous decision has brought joy and relief to couples like Kunchanok Khantiphong and Edward Jonathan Caiga. The pair, who were at work when the Senate vote passed, expressed immense happiness at the prospect of finally being able to build a life together legally.

“Marriage and building a family are important to us, and now it’s a reality,” said Kunchanok.

Caiga, a Filipino who moved to Thailand 17 years ago, emphasized the sense of security and confidence the law provides. “This law will help enforce the fundamental necessities that everyone deserves,” he said. “I can now live in Thailand permanently, adopt a child, and buy a home with my partner.”

Thailand’s reputation for inclusivity and acceptance has long been a source of pride. However, the country has struggled for decades to pass a marriage equality law due to deeply rooted conservative values and widespread discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community. The current government, led by the Pheu Thai party, made marriage equality a top priority and actively engaged in LGBTQ+ initiatives, including a prominent presence at the annual Bangkok Pride parade.

Kunchanok acknowledged the difficult journey towards equality, saying, “After this law, we can be a whole package with each other. A real couple. A legal couple.”

The legalization of same-sex marriage is a significant victory for LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future. It also serves as a beacon of hope for other countries in the region striving for similar legal recognition.
