Wed Sep 25 03:20:58 UTC 2024: ## Outer Banks Home Collapses into Ocean, Marking Third in Three Days

**(Rodanthe, NC) –** A fourth Outer Banks home has succumbed to the relentless Atlantic Ocean, collapsing on Tuesday afternoon. This marks the third such incident in just three days, raising alarm about the escalating coastal erosion plaguing the region.

The house, situated on G.A. Kohler Court in Rodanthe, is the tenth on the street to meet this fate in just four years. Rising sea levels and relentless erosion have intensified in recent years, leaving the North Carolina barrier islands vulnerable to these destructive forces.

The owners of the recently collapsed home had already hired a contractor to demolish the structure. However, high tides and other factors delayed the work, resulting in the structure’s tragic collapse.

The National Parks Service has issued a warning to beachgoers, advising them to avoid the waters near Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo due to hazardous debris. A large section of the beach has been closed to the public, and beachgoers are urged to wear hard-soled shoes to avoid injury from debris such as nails, building materials, exposed septic systems, and broken concrete.

A massive cleanup effort has been underway since Friday, with property owners, contractors, visitors, and seashore employees working tirelessly to remove debris spread over 20 miles of beach. More than 24 pickup trucks were used to haul away the wreckage.

Rodanthe has become an epicenter of this ongoing crisis, with numerous oceanfront homes succumbing to the encroaching sea. One home that collapsed over the weekend had once enjoyed a 100-yard buffer of beach between its back door and the ocean.

“There was a football field of beach behind these houses” when we bought our home more than a decade ago, one homeowner lamented to WRAL. “It was not like this when we bought it.”

This latest collapse serves as a stark reminder of the urgent threat posed by climate change and its impact on vulnerable coastal communities.
