Wed Sep 25 06:52:27 UTC 2024: ## Airtel Launches Free AI-Powered Spam Detection System in India

**New Delhi, India** – Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom operator, has launched a free AI-powered spam detection system for all its customers. The system, which is claimed to be India’s first network-based AI-powered spam detection system, aims to combat the country’s rampant problem of unwanted calls and messages.

The feature will alert Airtel customers in real-time about suspected spam calls and text messages and will be automatically activated for all users at no extra cost. The company claims the system will process 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls daily, identifying up to 100 million potential spam calls and 3 million spam SMS messages every day.

Airtel’s CEO, Gopal Vittal, highlighted the severity of the spam problem in India, stating that it has become a “menace for customers.” He also urged for stricter regulation of messaging platforms, particularly WhatsApp, to protect users from spam.

The company’s new spam detection system utilizes a dual-layer protection mechanism, filtering communications at both the network and IT systems layers. It employs a proprietary algorithm developed by Airtel’s data scientists that analyzes various parameters like caller usage patterns, call frequency, and duration in real-time.

Beyond filtering, the system also scans SMS content for malicious links, cross-referencing against a centralized database of blacklisted URLs. This additional layer of protection aims to prevent users from accidentally clicking on suspicious links, which are often used for fraud and phishing attempts.

The system can also detect anomalies such as frequent IMEI changes, which are often indicators of fraudulent behavior. The launch of this system comes amidst a rise in reports of scammers impersonating government authorities, delivery services, and credit providers in India.

Airtel’s move is expected to be a significant step towards mitigating the spam problem in India. The company’s AI-powered solution, coupled with calls for stricter regulation, could bring much-needed relief to users who have long suffered from unwanted calls and messages.
