**New York, NY** – The global market for artificial intelligence (AI) products is set to skyrocket, reaching a staggering $990 billion by 2027, according to a new report by consulting firm Bain & Co. This explosive growth, fueled by widespread adoption across industries, will lead to significant disruptions in businesses and economies worldwide.

The report, titled “Global Technology Report 2023,” reveals that the AI market, encompassing both services and hardware, will grow at an annual rate of 40% to 55% from its current $185 billion value. This rapid expansion will be driven by the increasing use of AI systems and larger data centers to train and operate them, as companies and governments leverage the technology to enhance efficiency.

However, this booming demand is expected to strain supply chains for essential components, particularly semiconductors, which are crucial for running AI services. Bain warns that the combination of heightened demand and geopolitical tensions could lead to shortages in semiconductors, personal computers, and smartphones.

The report highlights the significant increase in demand for upstream chip components, with integrated circuit design and related IP projected to rise by 30% or more by 2026. This surge will put immense pressure on manufacturers. Additionally, the cost of larger data centers could increase from $1 billion to $4 billion currently to between $10 billion and $25 billion within the next five years, as their capacity expands.

“These changes are expected to have huge implications on the ecosystems that support data centers including infrastructure engineering, power production, and cooling,” Bain stated in its report.

While companies are transitioning from experimental phases to large-scale deployment of generative AI across their operations, concerns surrounding costs and data privacy are pushing them towards smaller, more efficient language models, resembling the lightweight versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Governments are investing heavily in sovereign AI initiatives, with countries like Canada, France, India, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates spending billions of dollars to subsidize domestic AI development, infrastructure, and models trained on native data. However, establishing successful sovereign AI ecosystems is a complex and expensive endeavor, warns Anne Hoecker, head of Bain’s Global Technology practice.
