Wed Sep 25 03:43:24 UTC 2024: ## Yankees’ Torres Makes Costly Base Running Blunder in Loss to Orioles

**New York, NY -** The New York Yankees’ hopes of clinching the AL East title suffered a setback on Tuesday night after a baffling base running decision by Gleyber Torres in their 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

With two outs in the seventh inning, Juan Soto hit a single to right field, driving in a run and putting Torres on third. As Soto advanced to second, Torres inexplicably started to run toward home plate before being tagged out in a rundown. The blunder cost the Yankees a potential go-ahead run, leaving Aaron Judge stranded at first.

“When it comes down to it, stuff like that can’t happen,” Judge stated after the game. “Can’t keep shooting ourselves in the foot with mistakes like that on the basepaths.”

Torres and manager Aaron Boone attempted to explain the inexplicable after the loss, claiming Torres was trying to prevent Soto from being tagged out. However, Boone acknowledged that Torres should have either “bluffed” a run at home or fully committed to the play, instead of leaving himself in a vulnerable position.

“He does make some mistakes on the bases,” said Boone. “He’s cleaned it up a lot from I think last year and the year before, where he was getting himself in trouble a lot. But I think in his case, toned down some of the aggressiveness. But I also think tonight is a case of protecting a runner, too. But again, it’s gotta be bluff or sell-out, though.”

The Yankees will get another chance to clinch the division title on Wednesday night against the Orioles.
