The rise of AI image generators has brought a new challenge to the world of history, as people are increasingly creating fake historical photos that can deceive viewers. While some are created for humor, others are crafted to intentionally mislead.
A recent article on Bored Panda highlights this issue, showcasing examples of AI-generated images that have been shared online as authentic historical photographs. One example features a photo of Henry Ford in his first car, which appears remarkably clear and detailed but contains telltale signs of manipulation, such as his hand going through the steering wheel. Another image depicts a group of men standing next to a giant horse, with features like blurry faces and oddly large fingers that betray its AI origin.
Experts are sounding the alarm about the potential impact of these fake images on our understanding of history. “The more these fake images circulate, the harder it becomes to separate fact from fiction,” says digital colorist and bestselling author Marina Amaral. “Each new post or share distorts the truth a little bit more, until we’re left with a version of the past that bears little resemblance to reality.”
Historian Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse, who specializes in debunking fake historical images, offers some advice for identifying AI-generated photos. She recommends paying close attention to the hands in images, as most AI programs still struggle with rendering them accurately. She also suggests conducting reverse image searches to trace the origins of suspicious images and utilizing AI detection software.
