Wed Sep 25 06:59:50 UTC 2024: ## International Observers Witness Peaceful Polling in Jammu and Kashmir

**Srinagar, September 30:** A delegation of 15 foreign diplomats, led by the US Deputy Chief of Mission Jorgan Andrews, arrived in Srinagar on Saturday to observe the second phase of polling in Jammu and Kashmir. The delegation, which includes representatives from various countries including Mexico, Korea, Somalia, Spain, and South Africa, is in the region to assess the ground situation and the electoral process.

The diplomats have visited several polling stations in central Kashmir, interacting with voters and officials. They have expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made by the Election Commission of India to encourage participation.

This visit marks a significant shift in New Delhi’s approach to Kashmir, with increased diplomatic engagement. Earlier, such delegations were discouraged, but now they are visiting frequently. This trend follows the G20 tourism meet in Srinagar in May 2023.

The delegation will continue its observations over the next two days, meeting with various sections of society in the region. Additional diplomats are expected to arrive for the third phase of polling on October 1st, which will cover North Kashmir.

The second phase of polling is crucial, with the constituencies of Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Budgam participating. The third phase will cover Sopore, Kupwara, Handwara, and Bandipora in North Kashmir.
