The upcoming Zelda title, “Echoes of Wisdom,” continues the trend of the series embracing player freedom, according to veteran producer Eiji Aonuma. In a recent Nintendo dev Q&A, Aonuma and co-directors Satoshi Terada and Tomomi Sano (the first woman to direct a Zelda game) discussed the challenges of balancing this design approach.
The game features “echoes,” items and entities that can be used to solve puzzles and encounters. Initially, developers were concerned about imposing limitations on the use of echoes, fearing it would break gameplay mechanics. “We had ideas like being limited to using only 20 echoes in a dungeon,” said Terada. “But it would have been frustrating for players if they couldn’t use a solution that worked in a previous situation.”
Ultimately, the team decided to scrap these restrictions and embrace complete freedom. Aonuma, reflecting on the design process, explained that this approach challenges the traditional game design philosophy of gradually lifting restrictions. “It’s almost as if introducing some freedom attracted even more freedom,” he said.
The team cited a notorious shrine exploit from Breath of the Wild as inspiration for this approach. Players discovered they could solve the puzzle by simply flipping the game board, bypassing intended mechanics. According to Aonuma, “If this kind of solution isn’t allowed, then it’s not fun.”
This shift towards player freedom marks a continuation of the direction established by Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The game’s development process demonstrates the challenges and rewards of prioritizing player agency, even if it means pushing the boundaries of conventional game design.
