Mon Sep 23 22:02:29 UTC 2024: ## Apple Declares 12 Macs “Vintage” and “Obsolete,” Limiting Repair Options

Apple has officially declared 12 Mac models “vintage” and “obsolete,” impacting the repair services available for users. This move means it will become increasingly difficult for owners of these older Macs to get repairs from Apple or authorized service providers.

The “vintage” designation applies to products that have been out of production for five to seven years. While Apple Stores and authorized providers won’t outright refuse repairs, the availability of parts will be limited, making repairs more challenging.

The “obsolete” designation applies to products that have been out of production for more than seven years. Repairs for these Macs are generally not accepted by Apple or authorized providers, except for battery replacements, which may be available for another three years.

This announcement impacts three Mac models that have been added to the “vintage” list and nine models added to the “obsolete” list. Notably, the special edition (RED) iPhone 8 has been classified as “vintage” despite its shorter sales period compared to the standard iPhone 8.

While Apple’s policy regarding vintage and obsolete products is a contentious topic, the company argues that it’s not feasible to continue manufacturing parts for older devices that are not used in current products.

For Mac owners whose devices have been categorized as vintage, it’s recommended to proactively replace the battery to prolong their lifespan. Additionally, it’s important to remember that older Macs require extra attention to security measures.
