Wed Sep 25 14:54:05 UTC 2024: ## First Death in ‘Suicide Pod’ Sparks Investigation in Switzerland

**Schaffhausen, Switzerland** – A 64-year-old American woman became the first known person to die using the “Sarco” suicide capsule earlier this week in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. The incident has sparked a criminal investigation, with Swiss authorities detaining several individuals on charges of “inducing and abetting suicide.”

The Sarco capsule, a 3D-printed device developed by Exit International, a Netherlands-based assisted suicide group, allows individuals to end their lives by releasing nitrogen gas into a sealed environment. The individual is seated in a reclining chair within the pod and can initiate the process with the push of a button, resulting in a peaceful death by asphyxiation within minutes.

The woman who died, reportedly suffering from a severe immune compromise, was accompanied only by Florian Willet, co-president of The Last Resort, a Swiss branch of Exit International. Willet described the death as “peaceful, fast and dignified.”

While Switzerland allows assisted suicide under strict conditions, authorities have expressed concern about the Sarco capsule’s autonomous nature. Swiss law requires that the individual must directly carry out the act of ending their life without “external assistance” and that any helpers involved have no “selfish purpose.”

Exit International’s founder, Philip Nitschke, claims the organization’s lawyers advised him the Sarco capsule is legal to use in Switzerland. However, Swiss authorities have warned that operators of the Sarco could face criminal proceedings and potential jail time.

The incident has raised ethical and legal questions about the role of assisted suicide and the development of autonomous devices that facilitate death. The investigation into the first death in the Sarco capsule is ongoing.
