**Gaza City, Palestinian Territories** – Nearly a year after Hamas and other militant groups kidnapped at least 251 people from Israel into Gaza, a cease-fire deal remains elusive, leaving families desperate for the return of their loved ones.
While 154 hostages have been released or recovered, at least 97 remain in Hamas captivity, with around a third believed to be dead. The recent discovery of six hostages killed by their captors has heightened the urgency for a resolution.
“We can’t allow ourselves not to have hope,” said Lee Siegel, brother of American hostage Keith Siegel. He believes a permanent cease-fire deal is the only way to return hostages alive.
Among the hostages still missing are American citizen Keith Siegel, whose last known video appearance was in April, and Sagui Dekel-Chen, whose father Jonathan believes a cease-fire is the only solution for his release.
Hamas has also confirmed the deaths of three hostages who were shot and killed by Israeli soldiers in December, and the recent discovery of three bodies believed to have been killed in an Israeli airstrike.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a staggering death toll. Over 41,300 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel began its offensive last year, with thousands potentially buried under rubble. In Israel, over 1,200 people, including hundreds of IDF soldiers, have been killed.
The situation has left families devastated, with parents like Yael Alexander, whose son Edan was taken hostage, expressing their desperate hope for his return.
Hamas, meanwhile, has warned that any attempt to use military force to free hostages will result in their return “in shrouds,” further complicating the already tense situation.
The international community is urging both sides to engage in dialogue and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict. However, with the current deadlock and the mounting death toll, the path to a lasting solution remains uncertain.
