**Emden, Germany** – Wallenius Marine has christened its new car carrier, “Future Way,” in Emden, Germany. This innovative vessel, designed in collaboration with KNUD E. HANSEN and Volkswagen Group, represents a significant leap forward in sustainable shipping.
The “Future Way” boasts advanced hydro- and aerodynamic features, resulting in reduced emissions, energy consumption, and environmental impact. The ship can traverse the Atlantic without ballast water when fully loaded, minimizing the risk of invasive species spread and further lowering fuel consumption.
“The Sleipner concept, of which the ‘Future Way’ is the first of two vessels, is the result of close co-operation between Wallenius, KNUD E. HANSEN and VW Group,” stated Johan Mattsson, CEO of Wallenius Marine. “This partnership enables us to take further steps towards truly sustainable shipping.”
The “Future Way” can carry up to 6,500 cars and features an efficient center ramp system for loading and unloading. Built by CIMC Raffles in China, the vessel measures 200 meters long and 37 meters wide.
“They not only emit less CO2, but also fewer nitrogen oxides, soot particles, and sulphur oxides, leading to better local air quality,” added Simon Motter, Head of Volkswagen Group Logistics. “The innovative design of these vessels results in lower fuel consumption and allows us to reduce emissions even further today.”
The launch of the “Future Way” comes as maritime leaders and cargo owners call for immediate action on maritime decarbonization. The vessel is a testament to the growing commitment to sustainability within the shipping industry.
