Mon Sep 23 18:16:16 UTC 2024: ## US Deploys Additional Troops to Middle East Amid Israel-Hezbollah Tensions

**WASHINGTON** – In response to escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, the United States has sent a small number of additional troops to the Middle East, the Pentagon announced Monday.

While the exact number and specific mission of the deployed forces remain undisclosed, Pentagon spokesperson Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder emphasized the deployment as a “precautionary measure.”

The move comes as Israel shifts its focus from Gaza, where it has been engaged in a year-long war with Hamas, to its northern border. Hezbollah, a powerful Lebanese militia, has been firing rockets into Israel in support of its ally Hamas.

Israel launched widespread strikes on Monday, targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, the eastern Bekaa Valley, and the northern region near Syria. Among the targets was a senior Hezbollah leader, Ali Karaki, head of the southern front, in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The Biden administration has been actively working to contain the conflict to Gaza and has repeatedly urged a diplomatic resolution to the Israel-Lebanon border crisis. This diplomatic push has been reinforced by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who has been in daily contact with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant.

Experts warn that Iran’s involvement could escalate the conflict, particularly if Hezbollah’s existence is threatened. They also express concern that U.S. troops could become targets in a wider regional war.

In a statement, the Pentagon reassured that the U.S. remains capable of protecting its forces and personnel, and is committed to deterring any regional actors from exploiting the situation or escalating the conflict.

The U.S. has substantial military capabilities in the region, including the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group, fighter aircraft, and air defenses. Ryder highlighted the increased capabilities since April 14th when Iran launched a drone and missile attack on Israel, emphasizing the U.S.’s ability to protect its forces if attacked.
