Mon Sep 23 22:40:50 UTC 2024: ## Muslim Chaplains Offer Spiritual Guidance Amidst Campus Protests Over Israel-Palestine Conflict

**New Haven, CT** – In the wake of nationwide protests against the Israeli offensive in Gaza, Muslim chaplains at American universities are providing spiritual support and guidance to students grappling with the complex and emotionally charged issue.

Imams Abdul-Muhaymin Priester of Grinnell College and Omer Bajwa of Yale University, in an interview with MuslimMatters, emphasized the importance of viewing the conflict through the lens of “Haqq and Batil” – truth and falsehood. They stressed that the protests, often met with hostility and repression, represent a powerful moral awakening among students.

“Despite the suffering, confusion, and anger, we must remember this is from the Qadr (predestination) of Allah,” said Imam Priester. “This is a situation of Haqq and Batil, oppressors versus the oppressed. The entire world has seen the reality of what this project [Israel] is about.”

He went on to explain that the creation of Israel was not about establishing a homeland, but rather about fracturing the Muslim world and hindering its political unity. “It was about dismantling the Ottoman Empire and ensuring that Muslims would never again pose a threat on the world stage,” he stated.

Imam Bajwa, speaking from his perspective as a spiritual advisor, lauded the students’ activism and civil disobedience, calling it a “great American tradition.” He acknowledged the students’ deep grappling with existential and philosophical questions as they witness the unveiling of power, hypocrisy, and lies. “They’re getting a front row education in the way the world works,” he noted.

Both chaplains stressed the importance of Muslims taking a leading role in the fight for justice, urging them to actively engage in the struggle against oppression. They emphasized the responsibility that Muslims bear, both in this world and on the Day of Judgement, for the welfare of their brothers and sisters.

The interview highlights the critical role that Muslim chaplains play in navigating the complexities of the Israel-Palestine conflict, offering spiritual guidance and support to a generation of students seeking to understand and engage with these crucial issues.
